Summer 2019 Budget Tips

Seven ways to keep your budget from burning up during the hottest time of the year.

When the weather is warm it can feel like a vacation so you might find that you’re spending more money than normal by soaking up the sunshine with summer activities. Thankfully, there are some ways that you can still enjoy summertime and all the fun activities, all while being a savvy with your money.

Summer Cook Out

Warmer weather means that our bodies are going to be inclined towards fresh, lighter foods to eat. Instead of bulking up with calorie-packed casseroles, opt for a meat and pairing with a fresh salad or some roasted veggies. If you have access to a grill, use that to keep the heat out of your house and for a nice alternative to stove-top cooked meals while the weather is nice enough to cook outside.

Invite friends over for a potluck cookout. Here you can require all attendees to bring a side dish and drinks while you provide the main dish. The main dish could be as simple as grilled hotdogs with a variety of condiments! This is a low-price way to get friends and family together and enjoy a summer evening together without anyone having to carry the burden of providing all the food and drinks.

Take a Walk

Are you making an expensive monthly payment for a gym membership? Do you take taxis or Ubers frequently? Warm weather means that you can remove those expenses during the summer by simply choosing to walk over uber and get a workout in outdoors rather than spending on a gym membership.

Better yet, get your bicycle or rent a bicycle as an alternative to taking a cab.

Cancel Cable

There is so much to be doing outside and enjoying the weather, forgo your cable subscription throughout the summer and you might find that you are able to get more done and your free time can be spent outdoors. If giving up cable is not an option for you, switching to a service like PlayStation Vue, Amazon FireStick or Sling TV where you can stream live TV through a device that’s connected to the internet without paying the hefty cable bill.

Save on Utilities

Instead of cranking the AC as soon as it gets warm, use fans and shade your windows instead to save on your energy bill. Even when you do need to turn it on, keeping it only two degrees warmer could save you big time.

Since the days are longer, you can keep off the lights and let the natural sunlight come into your home. Also, since summertime is a great time for fresh food (see above) you don’t have to use all your kitchen tools to cook a meal. This can help reduce your bills in the summertime.

Outdoor Sale

With so many people out and about, summer is a great time to have a garage/yard sale. Now that you’re done with spring cleaning, earn some money on things that you’re looking to get rid of. If you have neighbors close by, invite them to join in, too! This will entice more people to come to your sale because they can hit up several garage sales at the same time.

Post to a local Facebook group or advertise with flyers throughout your area to increase the traffic to your sale.

Summer Staycation

Most people like to get out of town during the summer and go on vacation. While, we love vacations, we realize that they can be expensive. Don’t worry, you can get the feel of a vacation, right at home!

Most people don’t realize all their city has to offer because we are creatures of habit that usually stick our schedule and frequent our favorite local spots. Take a long weekend and plan out fun things to do around the area that you haven’t experienced yet. This could be as simple as a new restaurant or going to a new water park or museum in the area.

If staying in is more your thing, spend the weekend relaxing and recharging with a little self-care. Treat yourself to a manicure or pedicure, sleep in, and soak with a bath bomb or facemask. If you have a yard or patio, buy a small kiddy pool and create your own oasis.

Low Cost Activities

Summertime is full of outdoor activities that are either free or inexpensive. Look for local organizations that are hosting outdoor events for the family or something exclusively for kids.

These can be found by looking into community organizations around your areas. Churches, youth groups or small businesses host summertime events for locals frequently throughout the summer.

Another option is to head to your local pool or splash park to take advantage of the sunshine. Better yet, if you’re close to the beach you can take public transportation, a bike ride or a walk to your closest beach and spend a day in the sand and sun. Pack a picnic with snacks and drinks to save from spending money throughout the day and don’t forget the sunscreen!
