Free Things to Do in Texas For Locals

Your 2020 Texas List. Everything That Local Texans Should Try At Least Once.

Last week we discussed why New Year’s Resolutions are a bad idea, and provided a few alternatives instead. This week, we’re offering one more alternative idea: a 2020 list. You don’t have to do everything on the list, but the idea is to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You might be surprised with what you learn about yourself or your family. This list is a great opportunity to bond with loved ones.

You’ve likely lived in your state for years; but have you ever actually experienced everything the state has to offer? If you live in Texas, then you already know that there is plenty to do in your state, and maybe even your own city. We know sometimes money can be tight, so keep an eye out for free attractions happening locally. Free events on Facebook can be few and far between, so until you manage to see another one on your social media feed, we have a few ideas for you. Spend an afternoon doing one of the items from your state’s list, or take a weekend trip to visit friends or family in another city and check off multiple items at once.

Texas 2020 List

Go for a River Walk (San Antonio)

There are plenty of stores to shop at and restaurants to dine at in the area. What makes this experience free though is that you are still able to stroll through the River Walk without having to spend money. The River Walk is 15 miles of urban waterway. The good news is that the Alamo is right next door. Not sure when to go? Check out their holiday event calendar (not all of their events are free, but most are).

See A Concert at The Levitt Pavilion (Arlington)

This is something great to try in the summer. The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts has free shows. It is volunteer and sponsored based, so you just have to supply chairs, food, and drink. Go with family or friends and see a band you’ve never heard before to make the experience exciting. Their website has a list of upcoming events throughout the year.

Lady Bird Lake Hike-And-Bike Trail (Austin)

If you enjoy both the excitement of a city and the peace of nature, then this is the walk for you. This scenic trail lets you walk past green parks and calm lakes, as well as the city’s downtown. Locals know that there is plenty of wildlife on this path, and some reviews even include images. With the city being so close, you can easily go for a walk then grab delicious food afterwards. Try out a new restaurant.

Visit the Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth)

This museum has many different styles of art, and is a great way to spend an educational day with the family. Learn about Mayan pottery or view the only Michelangelo hand painting in the US. You will not be bored – there are actually two entire buildings of art to see. If you already know that you will want to go on a guided tour, then you should check out their list of upcoming tours.

Go for A Stroll at Landa Park (New Braunfels)

The Landa Park is a beautiful get away from the city. As one review puts it, there are, “almost more deer than people,” here. Besides the deer, there are a ton of other things to see. There are playgrounds for the kids, a train for the family, and even paddle boats for a romantic getaway. This park is complete with spring fed pools and even some historical attributes.

Find Out How Craft Beers Are Made (Dallas)

The Four Corners Brewing Co offers free tours of their brewhouse on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. Of course, there are free samples along the way. Check out their calendar to see their upcoming free tours. This is probably a better place to visit with friends, rather than family, since visitors must be at least 21 years old to go. This is a great experience if you’ve never gone on a brewery tour.

Catch A Show at The Miller Outdoor Theater (San Antonio)

This outdoor theater in Hermann Park provides free concerts. You can purchase concessions there to help support the free performances, or you can pack your own picnic for the family with food and drink. Want to know who will be performing there? They have a website with a list of upcoming events as well as a sign up form to keep you updated on which musicians will be there throughout the year.

2020 is a new year and a new decade, so this might be a great opportunity to try new things you’ve never had the opportunity to do. Hopefully this list at least provides you and the family a few ways to stay entertained this new year without breaking the bank.
